A bettor earned a substantial sum on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro immediately preceding it was publicly declared, sparking debate about whether someone profited from confidential information of the event.

Sudden Shift in Forecasts

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that the Venezuelan president would be removed from office by the month's conclusion surged in the period preceding Donald Trump announced on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been apprehended.

A single trader, which registered on the site last month and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, made more than $436K from a modest bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before News Break

Market statistics shows that users assessed the probability of a political change at just 6.5% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

However the market's assessment had jumped to 11% by shortly before midnight and spiked dramatically in the first hours of January 3rd, pointing to a sharp shift in positions right before the public announcement was made.
