An defense minister has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively investigating the possible threats associated with Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been told to avoid talking about classified information in all vehicles.
During a recent appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard addressed claims that Ministry of Defence officials have been told not to discuss secret information while travelling in China-made cars.
The minister explained that the ministry is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its vehicle pools, but stressed that security is a concern in all contemporary cars.
Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles represent a very small number.
However whether you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their vehicle, to avoid having conversations at a classified classification in any kind of car, because of the growing threats of eavesdropping that exist in all vehicle, to restrict those confidential conversations in protected areas. That’s a prudent and sensible thing for anyone worried about security.
When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the ministry to stop using all Chinese vehicles, the minister replied: ‘That’s exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”
The revelation comes as reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow China to disable public transport and bring disruption to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russian spy ship has been directing lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” action by government representatives.
The broader security environment underscores the significance of strong measures and caution in all aspects of government activities, from transport use to discussions habits.
