A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate what caused this incident,” stated the country's president.
The official reported that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the year before. This venture was intimately linked to his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
The building of both railway systems was supervised by the army, marking a notable expansion of its role in national works. They were built at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently sparked significant apprehensions over construction quality.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
